This article troubleshoots an error that occurs when attempting to install Planning & Data Warehouse; in the window of the installation wizard where you are to select the features you are looking to install, the Planning add-in is grayed out or not enabled.
The Planning add-in feature will appear grayed out/disabled due to:
- Excel is not installed on the machine
- Incorrect License Key
NOTE: Planning & Data Warehouse license keys do not hit a license server currently - so the 2020 License Server change does not cause/affect this component.
If our Accounting & Licensing have verified that the license key is correct and linked to a purchase of the Planning add-in feature, then you will have to verify that Excel is installed.
In some cases, the installation wizard does not pick up the presence of Excel even though it is installed on your machine. In that case, you will have to apply a registry key(s) to trick the installer.
In the installer, to determine if Excel is installed or not, it looks for “Excel.Application” => “CurrVer” registry key in the “HKey_Classes_root” hive (screenshot attached). In case this key is missing, the installer assumes that Excel is not installed on the machine and does not enable the planning package.
You will have to create HKey_Classes_root\Excel.Application if it does not exist, and then import other necessary reg keys:
You may need to import and export the following registry keys from working instances - please refer to this KB for more details on those paths:
